Comparative Diagram 1 - Delorme dentelles c 1765 and c. 1775.

In Comparative Diagrams 2 and 3 we are going to look at a set of small Delorme tools that were copied by Jubert. I say copied I cannot prove this claim however I want to point out firstly the differences in the two Delorme centers in Comparative Diagram 3. According to my unproven theory, the spiral tools or scrolls as Barber calls them, started to become more and more popular so that dentelles in the late 70.s and 80's were mainly decorated with this type of ornament. we see this same dominance occuring in the decoration of the Rahir No. 817, while within the decoration of 1790 we see tools that were familiar in the early Delorme bindings. The point of this observation is to suggest that Delorme was decorating with the del-11 pair in the 60's and thus in advance of Jubert who was even using them in the 80's. We have to wonder what was going on, why would anyone go out of their way to copy this small eccentric pair of ornaments? We can see that Delorme used them in a very specific way in the same design location in both cases.

Comparative Diagram 4 - Jubert center (side) vs Delorme center (side)

In Comparative Diagram 4, we are shocked to see Jubert using very similar tools in the same way in his dentelle design. Perhaps this can be explained by Delorme repeating what he did in past years and Jubert copying this new apparition of Delorme's older work.

Comparative Diagram 5 - Delorme dentelle vs signed Jubert 1781 dentelle

In Comparative Diagrams 5, we see just how close the design and tools are, Delorme using Dubuisson's old tools as well as his own seems to have been copied by Jubert in every department. however Juberts work looks less cluttered here with fewer dots. I could almost say that Jubert appears to be to Delorme what Derome was to Dubuisson. Derome had identical tools and used them in an identical way imitating the work of Dubuisson, so to Jubert appears to be copying Delormes work and tools. We do not know for sure who copied who or how this copying came about. Perhaps the fashion was set by tool makers who sold everyone similar tools, that cannot explain however the identical dentelle designs. What we do know for sure is that Delorme was 10 years ahead of Juburt in placing this sort Type six tool in the inner corners of the dentelle, and was possibly the first to use one.

A word of Caution

Even experts are sometimes wrong, before you spend thousands on a book, please do your own research! Just because I say a certain binding can be attributed to le Maitre isn't any kind of guarantee, don't take my word for it, go a step further and get your own proof. In these pages I have provided you with a way of doing just that.
