The binding shown above is found in a PDF document issued by the Biblioteca Nazionale Braidense (click here to see it) I show a Google translation of the accompanying text for this binding, however I see that even in the first line the translation is not great... this should read "French 'armorial' binding from the second half of the 18th century" There are a lot of limitations here as the quality of the pdf image is not sharp however we know from these past pages that these are Delorme tools and that this is yet another Delorme binding. The corner tool is however different from those that we have looked at on the previous pages. here we see the same type of tool that Jubert often used in his corners and yet one that Delorme used less than the others. |
This second example is found in 2015 Sotheby's online auction catalogue (click here to see it). From the auction information one cannot really get an idea of when this binding might have been made. However it shares some interesting charateristics with the first binding, these may have some chronological implications. For example the palette at the base of the spines is one that we have seen in some of the mosaics that might have been made as early as 1761, |
In Comparative Diagram 2, we can see that the same two tools have been used to create the central fountain like structure, this makes me think that there isn't a great time difference between the creation of these dentelles but it will be dangerous to make assertions when in fact there could be years separating them. It will be interesting to be able one day, to show just when the del-11 pair of imprints arrive in these dentelles. |

Even experts are sometimes wrong, before you spend thousands on a book, please do your own research! Just because I say a certain binding can be attributed to le Maitre isn't any kind of guarantee, don't take my word for it, go a step further and get your own proof. In these pages I have provided you with a way of doing just that. |
