Comparative Diagram 1 - Dubuisson dentelles c.1750

At the top of the page we see a Dubuisson c.1750 livre rouge that we have detailed on a previous page (click here to see it). From our information about it we are fairly certain that it dates to somewhere around c.1750. Below this I show a binding that I found on Pinterest, where you are rarely offered a lot of information (click here to see it).

Comparative Diagram 2 - Delorme dentelles enlarged

In Comparative Diagram 2, we can see that these dentelles share some common tools and design features, even though we have virtually no information on the Pinterest item we can see that it was made with Dubuisson's tools and more importantly, what looks like a bulbous vase, BV 1 is found in the corner decoration. This then proves that Dubuisson was using this tool long before Delorme, as I think this Pinterest dentelle was also executed by Dubuisson some time around c.1750. I found on the internet a portefeuille that I think is earlier, shown below, this may date to around 1743 according to the information given.

The Dubuisson portefeuille shown above is found in a Thierry de Maigret auction catalogue TRÈS BEAU PORTEFEUILLE EN MAROQUIN ROUGE... (click here to see it). If this is was really made in 1743 then it is one of the earliest Dubuisson dentelles of this type known and it has a lot in common with the binding shown below.

The binding shown above is found in La bibliothèque de feu Edouard Rahir Troisième partie Livres illustrés Paris 1935. This is a fantastic early folio sized Dubuisson dentelle that was copied for over 30 years by some of the most celibrated binders including Derome le jeune and Gosselin (click here to see a Derome example) and here to see a 1785 Gosselin example of a Dubuisson style dentelle.

On the next page we are going to see at last, a good reproduction of a Louis XV period portefeuille.

A word of Caution

Even experts are sometimes wrong, before you spend thousands on a book, please do your own research! Just because I say a certain binding can be attributed to le Maitre isn't any kind of guarantee, don't take my word for it, go a step further and get your own proof. In these pages I have provided you with a way of doing just that.
