The portefeuille shown above is found in an online Christie's auction catalogue, SALE 14636 Boniface de Castellane & Anna Gould: "A way of life" 7 March 2017, Paris. (click here to see it). If this portefeuille was made in 1768 as suggested by the Christie's experts, Pierre-Paul Dubuisson could not have made it and it could have only been made by Delorme. We need to be sure of this date and I tried searching without much luck Madame de Balthasar who I suppose was born a De Turckheim. We see however another bulbous vase that may help us.

Comparative Diagram 2 - Barber's bulbous vase tool, BL 7 vs Balthasar portefeuille example

In Comparative Diagram 2, we see another reminder that there is no such thing as a coincidence, this is a different bulbous vase model, yet it is also linked to W.Cat 744. Now it just so happens that yesterday I discovered yet another bulbous vase of this type. However it is found on a 1742 Missale Romanum and the dentelle decoration has a lot in common with the Balthasar portefeuille dentelle.

We do not know when this binding was made for Marie-Joseph de Sax but we do know that Delorme made a binding for her sometime in the 60's. with an armorial stamp similar to that of the Missale Romanum.

The binding shown above is found in a 2019 Gazette Drouot auction catalogue (click here to see it). The Drouot experts think this is binding by Derome however we know it was decorated by Delorme. This does not resolve however any of the questions raised here concerning the Balthasar portefeuille, certainly it has been made in the style of the early Dubuisson dentelles, similarly the Missale Romanum of Marie-Joseph de Sax appears to be early Dubuisson work, the palette at the base of the spines particularly of an early type. I suspect that if we were to find W.Cat 774, we would gain some insight into the timing of these works of art.

A word of Caution

Even experts are sometimes wrong, before you spend thousands on a book, please do your own research! Just because I say a certain binding can be attributed to le Maitre isn't any kind of guarantee, don't take my word for it, go a step further and get your own proof. In these pages I have provided you with a way of doing just that.
