Just when you think you have seen all of Delormes treasures I find more, this reproduction is from a 1999 Librairie Sourget catalogue: Manuscrits Et Livres Precieux Catalogue XX. At first you hardly recognize this set as the work of Delorme he has not used his favorite signature tools and the outer roulette is a surprise, as is the corner tool, even though you are sure you have seen it before, it is not in Barber's catalogue. We have covered literly hundreds of Delorme bindings in this series of more than 50 pages, yet there are tools found on these volumes that we have not seen before. Some are familiar however and they appear to indicate that this set was decorated by Delorme c.1770 ish. |
In Comparative Diagram 1, we see some familiar imprints especially DCR 10-2 this is a modification of Barber's DCR 10 which it closely resembles , we have seen this imprint previously in the Rahir 1814 binding. I recently ordered a copy of this Rahir catalogue 6 just to have a good copy of this binding which I show in all its completeness in Comparative Diagram 2. This magnificient dentelle stands as yet another Delorme masterpiece. |
In Comparative Diagram 3, we compare the Bocasse imprints with known Delorme specimens. There are some imprints here that we have not documented before, this is surprising considering that we have already documented a large number of Delorme decortions. I have catalogued del-70 and del 71 provisionally. I have been forced to have a three week interruption in this work, and these new catalogue numbers may have already been assigned previously, I would have to review the work of the past several months to be sure. However it strikes me that these unusual imprints share common bond with certain of Delorme's early tools. such as the one shown below in Comparative Diagram 4. |
I show in Comparative Diagram 4, two examples of the same detail so that we can better assess what is part of the central fleuron and what is not. When I first saw this binding, I was so surprised by the strange details and plaques, that I did not make a full study of the decoration other than noting that it must be post Dubuisson. (click here to see a 2018 page on this). I can see now that this binding is probably one of the most important in the early Derlorme bindings |
In Comparative Diagram 5, we see two Delorme imprints, that I maintain were never part of the Dubuisson tools, and these imprints have their own style that is also seen in certain other Delorme imprints such as del-70 shown in Comparative Diagram 3. If I had to recatalogue the Delorme imprints I would start on the basis of this unique set of tools (see also the Atlas tools). |

Even experts are sometimes wrong, before you spend thousands on a book, please do your own research! Just because I say a certain binding can be attributed to le Maitre isn't any kind of guarantee, don't take my word for it, go a step further and get your own proof. In these pages I have provided you with a way of doing just that. |
