The reproduction shown above is found in Livres dans de Riches Reliures des Seizième, Dix-Septième, Dix-Huitième et Dix-Neuvième Siècle by Édouard RAHIR, Paris 1910. I decided to look through all my files to see of I could not find more exaples of bindings that are made with multiple plaques, and when I found this one again I was stunned to see the same corner plaques that are on the binding that we have been studying on the previous page, even though these bindings are a decade apart they are still very similar. This was a great find because here was another chance to track down Jean Delorme by his tools. |
In Comparative Diagram 2, we see that these two corner plaques are the same, with the overlay leaving no doubt. |
In Comparative Diagram 3, I point out the fact that there are in the decoration of this 1773 binding the imprints from Pierre-Paul Dubuisson's tools, and in fact the same too,l pd 63 has been used in both the 1773 binding and the 1763 binding. More importantly we discover another imprint that I show in Comparative Diagram 4, this same imprint is found in the binding shown below No. 263 that is from 1772 or later. |
The binding shown above is another from Rahir's 1910 catalogue, I have partially detailed this binding on another page in 2017 (click here to see it). Our Etat research showed that this is a very important Delorme binding, with tools that link to many other of his bindings. We can now try to show where these tools are found in the mosaic bindings. On page three we looked at Tenschert 104 an Almanach Royal from 1772, in Comparative Diagram 5 below, I show matching imprints from Tenschert 104 and Rahir 263, probably the small accessory pair of imprints are also the same in both cases. |
Note that a small decorative crown has been added to the Rahir 263 example in Comparative Diagram 5. This imprint is an important one in the work of Delorme and can be seen in bindings as late as 1785. |
In Comparative Diagram 6, I show the cover of an 1785 Almanach Royal that is found in the Royal Library in Madrid (click here to see it). One cannot fail to see many identical tools in these bindings even though there is probably more than 12 years separating their execution. Thus we see that Jean Delorme was decorating bindings for more than 20 years, he made many beautiful dentelle and mosaic bindings and yet no one has recognized them. That terrible injustice is about to end in these pages. |

Even experts are sometimes wrong, before you spend thousands on a book, please do your own research! Just because I say a certain binding can be attributed to le Maitre isn't any kind of guarantee, don't take my word for it, go a step further and get your own proof. In these pages I have provided you with a way of doing just that. |
