If you have read my recent pages on the Mosaic bindings of Louis Douceur (click here to see them) then this binding reproduction from the new 2019 Heribert Tenschert catalogue will be a continuation of those pages concerning Louis Douceur and the so called atelier à la tulipe . We see here the same familiar tools, that may suggest that this binding was made nearer to the end of the decade, this remains to be proved however. |
We see in the Tenschert information that this is Michon's No. 218, I show this reference from Michon's 1956 book Les reliures mosaïquées du XVIIIe siècle (page 75) where he indicates that he has catalogued it as a binding from his unidentified atelier à la tulipe . The reader will probably be shocked to see that the authors of this new catalogue, in which you find many of the most important mosaics of the 18th century, do not mention Louis Douceur, nor is his name even listed in the indexes at the back of this extensive catalogue. I am not versed in the German language however we can see that they mention Michon and his statement that this atelier is closer to Derome than to Padeloup. I noticed two small tools that were reminicent of Padeloup tools, however when tested they turned out to be slightly different. |
In Comparative 2, I show the complete collection of imprints from this Tenschert 65 binding (with the exception of the fer à la tulipe shown in Comparative Diagram 3). The surprise is that we do not see some of the usual tools in this binding, perhaps due to size limitations. |
In Comparative Diagram 3, we compare the Tenschert 65 tulipe imprints with the Tenschert 63 tulipes (Michon No. 335). Thanks to Heribert Tenschert's catalogue we find at last a great reproduction of Michons No.335, a binding that he claimed to be the best example of his atelier à la tulipe . We are going to examine that on the next page. |

Even experts are sometimes wrong, before you spend thousands on a book, please do your own research! Just because I say a certain binding can be attributed to le Maitre isn't any kind of guarantee, don't take my word for it, go a step further and get your own proof. In these pages I have provided you with a way of doing just that. |
