Here again in this example the Tenschert information appears to be concerning Le Monnier however we find on this small binding Louis Douceurs fers à la tulipe . |
In Comparative Diagram 1, we see convincing proof that all of these imprints derive from the tools of Louis Douceur, however the most convincing proof for me is the the framing roulette used here, it is one of Douceur's favorites from this period. I show this in Comparative Diagram 2, where we compare the Tenschert 73 examples (A and B) with my own 1746 Douceur (click here to see it) |
Comparative Diagram 2 was a very interesting exercise, first it was hard to find a flaw that would allow me to measure the roulette exactly, once I found it then I looked for it on the Tenschert 73 examples that I had also scanned at 1200 dpi. I found the matching flaws that proved that these imprints were from the same Douceur roulette, however the individual units did not match up perfectly, and this was because the Tenschert reproduction is about 3% larger than actual size, this make a big difference in the alignment of these imprints. Measurement is a sacred act, and akin to godliness, without measurement we would still be cave men or less, wild animals I suppose. When was the first measurement made you ask... I suspect it was some time after someone discovered that he would have to divide his kill amongst the rest. |

Even experts are sometimes wrong, before you spend thousands on a book, please do your own research! Just because I say a certain binding can be attributed to le Maitre isn't any kind of guarantee, don't take my word for it, go a step further and get your own proof. In these pages I have provided you with a way of doing just that. |
