On the previous page we went through an elaborate proceedure to be able to produce the imprints that you see above, these are shown at 150 dpi, and enlarge to 300dpi. I want to get right to the meat of the this exercise it concerns the imprint that Barber has catalogued as FL. 150. |
In the overlay diagram shown above I have placed Barber's FL. 150 type model over the 1760 example. By inverting the Barber imprint and changing it to a 40% transparency we can more clearly see the 1760 imprint underneath. the dark shadow like outline is caused by the Barber imprint. On the previous page we discussed the problem of resizing width. In this example I can see that the 1760 imprint is probably the same imprint as FL. 150, however it is slightly bigger due to this resizing problem. The imprint has been turned 90 degrees for this diagram, the larger amount of shadow at the base as opposed to a small amount of shadow at the top, is due to making the binding too wide, the imprint is, I suspect, the same one. |
On page 277 of Catalogue of Printed Books and Bookbindings: The James A. de Rothschild Bequest at Waddesdon Manor, by Giles Barber 2013, we find that Barber has attributed the binding W.Cat 101 to Douceur where he lists the other tools found on this binding that he ascribes to Louis Douceur. We will come back to looking at this binding later. First we must examine the other tools found here on the 1760 binding logically they should all be Douceur tools. |
In Comparative Diagram 1, we can clearly see that these particular imprints found on the 1760 Office (shown as UNIDENTIFIED), appear to be from tools that were made to imitate Douceur's tools. We can see however that there are some distinct differences. Therefore this binding has not been made by Louis Douceur. Similarly we can conjecture that Barber's W.Cat 101, is not a binding that has been made by Douceur. |

Even experts are sometimes wrong, before you spend thousands on a book, please do your own research! Just because I say a certain binding can be attributed to le Maitre isn't any kind of guarantee, don't take my word for it, go a step further and get your own proof. In these pages I have provided you with a way of doing just that. |
