I first came across binding 258 in a Rahir catalogue over 10 years ago, it was obviously something special, I had no idea who might have made it but I scanned the image and put it in a special folder hoping to solve the mystery later, now De Ricci's No. 21 binding by Pierre Vente has solved the mystery, however I lost my references for binding 258 and I wanted to be sure of it's size, there are a number of ways I could have solved this problem, however I found an even better way when I discovered that Barber has in his tool catalogue this exact arms. Thus it was a simple matter to resize the binding and we can be sure if the imprint size which will prove to be even more important when we look at next binding. |
In the Comparative Diagrams 2, 3 and 4 we have confirmed the presence of a flaw in this imprint in 3 different bindings, the third (No. 218) I am going to show on the next page. This flaw as shown by the green arrow simplifies our work greatly, it means that it is almost 100 percent certain that these bindings have been made with the same tools, that they are all Vente bindings. |

Even experts are sometimes wrong, before you spend thousands on a book, please do your own research! Just because I say a certain binding can be attributed to le Maitre isn't any kind of guarantee, don't take my word for it, go a step further and get your own proof. In these pages I have provided you with a way of doing just that. |
